In response to the growing concern of climate change, many states in America have made it a requirement for automobiles to pass a smog test. The idea behind this test is to get cars that are particularly harmful to the environment off of the road so less damage can be done to the atmosphere. Although not every state is participating, many are, including the state of California. So living in a place like San Diego means that you need to have a regular smog test for your car if you want to drive it. To do that you’ll need to go to an auto repair shop that can administer a smog test. They’re pretty easy to find; it is important to know that most of them require appointments. To save yourself some time, you can just find a smog test site online on the DMV’s website.
The smog test sees how much dangerous gas your car releases into the atmosphere. The gases that are checked for are hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and oxygen. If your car produces high levels of these gases it will fail. Some older vehicles may have a harder time passing the test, so here are a few tips to help pass a smog test if you’re worried about the results.
- Make Sure Your Car is Running Well – If your car has problems operating in the first place, don’t bother getting a smog check yet. If your car isn’t running right, then the chances of you passing a smog test are very slim. Don’t waste your money on the smog test if you’re car isn’t running correctly or you will just be throwing it away. So first, get your car repaired before getting a smog check.
- Get the Engine Warm – Before you pull up to the smog station, be sure to have driven your car for at least 20 minutes. By doing this, your car will warmed up and running at the best possible level. By driving for about 15 miles, the car will have become accustomed to burning fuel, making it less likely for irregular smog results.
- Change Your Oil – Before your smog test, it is smart to have changed your oil recently. The reason for this is that contaminated oil in your system may cause your car to fail a smog test. Old oil eventually becomes contaminated which is why it is important to change your oil regularly, so before you go get your car tested, change the oil.
Although these tips won’t guarantee your car to pass, especially if it is an older vehicle with muffler problems, they will definitely help any cars that aren’t brand new.
